Driving the Blue Ridge Parkway
We took a leisurely journey, with breathtaking views at every turn, beginning 8 September, 2026. We left the rush (as much rush as two senior citizens can muster) behind and discovered why this scenic highway is an experience defined entirely by the path itself, not the destination.

A beautiful journey with no destination
When people ask about the best hidden secret along the Blue Ridge Parkway, the answer is simple: the parkway itself. There is no single stop that outshines the feeling of the road unfolding before you. Every vista invites you to pause, unwind, and watch the mist drift lazily across layered mountain ridges.

Plan for 19 miles per hour
While the posted speed limit is generally 45 MPH, don't count on keeping that pace. With so many captivating overlooks—and truly none we felt comfortable skipping—our real pace averaged around 19 MPH. To truly take in everything this winding highway has to offer, treat it as a proper weeklong adventure.

Realities of the road and imagining your trip
Traveling the route as septuagenarians taught us a few essential practicalities: comfort stations can be far apart, and most are rustic vault toilets without running water. Yet, the tranquility makes every mile worthwhile. Take this insight, imagine your own unforgettable route along the ridge, and start dreaming up your journey.
